Bishop James Curry warns, ‘We cannot be indifferent to religious persecution’

Christians and people of other faiths must not turn a blind eye to religious persecution, Bishop James Curry, Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster and Lead Catholic Bishop for Freedom of Religion and Belief, has warned.

In a statement marking International Freedom of Religion or Belief Day on 27 October, Bishop Curry highlighted the growing threats facing people around the world because of their faith.

“Today nearly 400 million Christians live in tangible fear of persecution for living the faith,” he said.

“Nor can we be indifferent to the plight of other people of faith and beliefs who are also persecuted for their sincerely held convictions.”

Bishop Curry called on people to pray for persecuted Christians, particularly in the run-up to Red Wednesday on 18 November.

He also encouraged people to give thanks for those who remain steadfast in their faith and to remember those martyred for their Christian witness.

Defending religious freedom

His message is a timely reminder that religious freedom must be defended for everyone, regardless of faith or belief.

Christian Solidarity International (CSI) works to defend freedom of religion and belief and to stand alongside persecuted Christians and other religious communities.

As persecution increases around the world, driving awareness and supporting those whose fundamental rights are threatened remain vital.
